Easy install
There are little to no instructions inClyde’s with the kit. The only real work involved is removing the unit and old parts. This required removing the compactor from the counter but the rest is straightforward. There is a template included with the kit. You will need to drill two small holes for the new screws. Remove the old switch, tape the template over the holes, install the new switch (wire order and position do not matter) and reassemble the unit. About a half hours worth of work if you take your time. The new mechanism is much more robust than the old switch plate and should last for a very long time.

Beware the "two screws, five minutes" repair stories!
Needed a replacement actuator for KitchenAid trash compactor model KUCS03FTSS0. The part that broke is a small metal flange held in place by two screws. PartSelect.com clearly shows this part in the online exploded view of Container Parts. When I received the replacement order in the mail, I was surprised that it was not what I thought I had ordered (a single replacement piece), but a new, *completely redesigned* actuator kit. For this model (and perhaps for other models) this new kit requires much more extensive work than just replacing two screws. Repair entailed removing the trash compactor from its installation position, removing the recess cover and machine front, disconnecting and removing the old actuator switch, drilling holes in the machine front, attaching the new actuator assembly, and disconnecting and reattaching the foot pedal. Not an overly burdensome or complicated repair, but I had been fooled by the expectation of it being a five-minute job! (Submitted on 7/2/2011 by Scott - Ventura, CA)

Compactor wouldn't turn on but I could reach up with my finger when the door was closed and activate the trash compactor. So I knew it was operating properly it just was not connecting when we pushed up the toe plate
It was unbelievably easy!! I used a screw driver to remove two screws then replaced with the new activator. $15 total fix... As opposed to $150+ for a service call and repair!!! Woo hoo...

Replaced switch actuator with a redsigned part actuator
Removed compactor drawer. Replaced toe guard. Since compactor electrical plug in our case is behind the machine, I turned off the circuit breaker at the electrical panel rather removing the plug. Removed compactor front (stationary part) of the compactor. In order to get the front assembly off-must pull the compactor machine out of the installed space under the cabinet in order to remove the screws on the sides of the front assembly. In addition must remove the top cover also to free the front assembly. Removal of the old actuator switch is combersome since there are several wires attached to the front assembly. After replacing the actuator and reinstalling the front assembly. Used the template provided to drill holes 3/32 for the replacement spring-holes are undersized and had to open them up to get the screws to go in.(1/8 might have been a better option). The hole alignment was also not great would suggest that you drill one hole with the templete and insert one screw and drill the 2nd hole using the new part as the template. Re-install machine under cabinet and re-install drawer. Everything should work fine.

Cheap piece of metal crippled trash compactor
After less than about 100 uses a little metal piece broke off the compactor. The piece pushes in a plunger switch when the door closes and allows activation of compaction thus prevening compaction with the door open. Without the piece the compactor does not work. Repairman was at my house for another Kitchen Aid repair and said he could come back and fix the compactor for about $200 but suggested I search online for the part because it was super simple to install. Took his advice and am back in action. Simply had to screw two screws to attach the actuator device. Took less time than writing this commentary.

Unit would not operate-off switch broke
Husband de-installed the unit and we laid it down on a blanket on the floor. By looking at the diagrams on line we figured out which part we needed. ORDER THIS PART because it is a part that was re-designed to solve the biggest problem with this unit...the foot bar that activates the plunger. In the old design, you had to push up the foot bar at bottom to crush and unlock. Once this redesigned part is installed which requires drilling through the sheet metal (don't worry, they give you a template but hubby did not have the right drill bit), there is a small switch on right of unit under foot pedal which you PUSH with foot NOT PULL UP! Makes the unit much better. Should have been designed like this from the beginning.

Reattach new actuator using 2 phillips. Very elementary. The difficulty was finding the actual replacement part. Partselect.com made it simple, and my wife now thinks I am a mechanical genius.

Off-on switch actuator broken (second time same model)
Ordered two replacements. Was shipped two redesigned parts (assemblies). Installation required more-or-less complete disassembly of garbage compactor. Unit is under-counter and is heavy and work is all at the bottom of unit. Requires drilling two new holes in metal. Instructions give wrong size drill for screws supplied. Supplied screws are robust stainless sheetmetal screws with tiny number one recessed Phillips heads - nearly impossible to drive through two layers of sheet metal with a little screwdriver. Most non-mechanics would have given up and called a repairman.

Compacting actuator broken due to design flaw
I received my Actuator Switch Kit 3 days after ordering. I opened the package and found more parts than I anticipated. I read the instructions and had to spend some time to understand them. I followed the instructions (a bit unusual for me) and the installation went without a hitch. The most difficult part was to basically uninstall the compactor from its cabinet location and remove the faceplate for access to the switch that needed to be replaced. Apparently the manufacturer understood there was a design flaw because the instructions said "...for trash compactor integrated switching redesign". Anyway putting it back together and back in the cabinet was very easy.

Would not compact
It was very easy. I unscrewed the broken acuator and screwed the new one on. It took less than 5 minutes. Much better than paying a repairman $150 for a service call. This part actually breaks often so I ordered 3 or the future.

When the compactor is on it begins it cycle every time I close the door and then fails to stop. I replaced the directional switch a few months ago and everything worked fine for a few weeks. Now I am thinking I may be having trouble with the stop activation switch or that my replacement part may have been defective. Could use some clarity here.

Hi Todd, Thank you for the question. This sounds like an issue with the Off-Switch Actuator Kit, PartSelect Number: PS3489806.The off-switch is used to supply power to the motor to initiate the compaction cycle. Check to see if the off switch has been damaged, and that it is working properly. However, if the switch is damaged, or will not stop the cycle when the button is engaged, the off-switch will need to be replaced. Hope this helps!

Hi there, sorry if this has been answered already. I'm pretty sure i need a off-kill actuator switch, but i notices a big gaping square hole in the back side if the door where the switch plunger should go, my question is whether or not that's correct, or am i missing a part of the door that would otherwise engage the plunger switch, thanks.
For model number KUCS03FSSS0
Hello Jeff, Thank you for the question. Checking the door panels there is no other parts that woudl attach or fit into the hole. Looks like it is for the Plunger. Thank you for your inquiry, good luck with this repair!

Do I need to disassemble the compactor in order to install a new foot switch and where can I get step-by-step installation guidance?
For model number KUCC151LPA0
Hello David, Thank you for the question. Here is a repair story from a previous customer that may help. "Repair entailed removing the trash compactor from its installation position, removing the recess cover and machine front, disconnecting and removing the old actuator switch, drilling holes in the machine front, attaching the new actuator assembly, and disconnecting and reattaching the foot pedal." If you need help placing an order, customer service is open 7 days a week. Please feel free to give us a call. We look forward to hearing from you!

Our trash compactor RAM does not run by itself when activated by the foot pedal. It requires that you hold the foot pedal switch down until it reachs bottom then let up on the switch to stop the RAM. Then you have to keep your foot on the foot pedal switch to return the RAM to the up position. I have replaced both the foot pedal switch and the ON/OFF switch. Neither of those solved the problem. When you turn the ON/OFF switch to off and engage the foot pedal switch the RAM goes down and back up without the use of the foot pedal switch but does not stop at the bottom to compact the trash. What do I replace next to solve the problem. Thank you. Larry

We bought this replacement kit because the actuator (if that's what it's called - it was a small metal foot) on our compactor broke off. We have replaced all the parts in the kit except the activator button, which was working fine until the broken old "foot" could no longer make contact with it. Now, when we close the compactor door it compresses every time and rumbles at the end of the operation until we open the door. We've figured out that when the right wall of the trash box hits the brown button on the inside right wall of the unit this is what starts the compression operation, ending with the rumbling noise that we have to manually stop by opening the door. What have we done wrong? How do we fix it to make it right? Thank you.
For model number KUCC151LPA0
Hello Susan, thank you for writing. From what you describe, it sounds like you need to install all the parts from the kit. This may make it function properly. You may also want to consider checking and possibly replacing the Directional Switch part PS11744742 or the Drive Gear Kit part PS398589 for your model. We hope this helps.

This is todd, i asked a question yesterday and i don't think the answer was correct given that i have just learned some new facts i wanted to share with you. If the unit is on the compactor starts before the drawer even gets close to the actuator switch. Does that change your opinion. I note there is another switch in the cabinet that is toggled when the drawer is in the chamber.
For model number KUCS02FRSS
HI Todd,
Thank you for your question. You mentioned in your original question to us that when the compactor is on it begins it cycle every time I close the door and then fails to stop. If your trash compactor keeps running after the cycle is complete, the problem may be with the top limit/directional switch assembly. The top limit/directional switch is a multifunction switch located at the top of the unit, and is activated by a metal tab on top of the ram. The directional switch is used to reverse the motor rotation and the travel direction of the ram. The top limit switch is often part of the directional switch and is used to automatically stop the motor when the ram reaches the top. If the top limit/directional switch contacts fail the motor may not stop at the completion of the cycle and will continue to run. To check for a defective switch, remove the unit from the cabinets and disconnect the power. Remove the mounting brackets and then the top panel. Inspect the switch actuating lever to ensure that the tab on the ram makes contact at the top of the ram’s travel. Remove the ram using caution not to damage the directional switch lever. Remove the switch and the wires from the switch terminals and check for continuity with a multi-meter. The top limit switch should have terminals marked C for “common” and NC for “normally closed”. You should see continuity between these two terminals without depressing the switch lever. With the lever depressed, there should be no continuity. You may require the electrical schematic for your model to determine the proper switch terminals to check. If you checks indicate otherwise, then you will need to replace the switch and verify the proper adjustment for the activating lever. You also may have a defective start switch. The start switch is used to supply power to the motor to initiate the compaction cycle. The switch may be a rotary, push button, or rocker style, and is located on the control panel or inside the drawer opening on foot pedal operated models. The switch uses momentary contacts that close to start the motor and then spring back to open the contacts. If the contacts weld or stick closed, the motor may continue to run after the cycle is complete. Check the start switch for continuity with a multi-meter. To determine if you have a defective switch, first locate the fuse or breaker and turn off the power. If your model uses a control panel mounted start or run switch, remove or lower the panel to expose the rear of the switches. You may have to pull the compactor partially out of the cabinets to do this. If your model uses a foot pedal operated switch, you will need to remove the unit from the cabinets to access the start switch and actuator. Using the wiring diagram for your model, determine the switch terminals to test and remove the wires from the terminals, usually marked C and NO. In the normal or resting position the switch should show no continuity. Only when rotated or depressed to the start or run position, should the switch then show continuity. If the switch shows continuity at all times, then it needs to be replaced. On foot pedal operated models, make sure that the actuator is not stuck and holding the switch closed. I hope this helps. Thank you and have a great day!
